LIVING ON THE MYTHIC EDGE

You know this moment: your life is trembling on the edge of a greater drama. You feel things stirring behind the curtain of everyday perception, moving pieces around you, bringing things together in astounding moments of synchronicity. You feel yourself driven, defended or thwarted by greater powers. Your life rhymes in inexplicable ways. You become aware that what is with you and around you – in what Jung called your “circumambient atmosphere” – has been charged with the energy of an archetype, call it a goddess or daimon, an angel or elemental.

You have been prepared for these awakening by dreams and by stories you heard in childhood. As Joseph Campbell said so clearly: “A dream is a personal experience of that deep dark ground that is the support of our conscious lives, and a myth is society’s dream. The myth is the public dream and the dream is the private myth.”

Australian Aborigines say that the Big stories are hunting the right people to tell them, like predators stalking in the bush. The trick is to put ourselves in a place where the Big stories can find us. In this mythic adventure in a dream location, we’ll let the Big stories hunt us, and make them the substance of the personal mythologies that bring courage, passion and healing into our lives.

When we are seized by the Big story, we step beyond limiting definitions and beliefs. Great healing becomes available because we can now draw on the immense energy that is generated by the sense of serving a larger purpose and living a mythic life. The muse, or creative genius, and the intelligences of the world-behind-the-world come to support our life projects, because we are following a deeper call.

We will learn the practice of dream archaeology. This is an emerging discipline, pioneered by Robert, that enables us to access the living past, to enter into direct communication with the keepers of ancestral wisdom and heal the collective and cultural soul loss that is a feature of our age. The practice of dream archaeology involves reclaiming authentic knowledge of ancestral traditions, including those that may have been buried or suppressed in the course of history, through a combination of careful research and shamanic journeying across time and between dimensions. The dream archaeologist combines the skills of the shaman, the scholar and the detective.

     You’ll confirm that

  • The gods love to travel in disguise

  • There is a Cosmic Costume department for spiritual guides. They dress according to occasions, and our level of understanding.

  • Your Big Story is hunting you.

  • When you remember your Bigger story, and start living it consciously, you find courage and purpose to get you through the darkest day.

  • The doorway to the Otherworld opens from wherever you are.

  • Synchronicity is when the universe gets personal.

  • Gods happen. Goddesses happen even more.

We’ll learn and practice the powerful and original techniques of Active Dreaming. We’ll become shamans of the breakfast table, helping each other to share inner experiences and harvest personal imagery to live richer mythic lives.

We’ll master the arts of shamanic lucid dreaming. Using shamanic techniques for shifting consciousness, we’ll embark on hyper-awake dream journeys with partners or a whole group to explore the imaginal realm and travel to places of healing, initiation and soul remembering that mystics and creators have always wished to visit.

We’ll play wonderful games of coincidence and imagination. We’ll walk in Baudelaire’s forest of living symbols that are looking at us. We’ll develop personal dictionaries of symbols and discover the magnetic power of symbols to bring together inner and outer events. Each of us will leave with a personal myth so deep and strong that it wants to take root in the world.
